Fond Farewell

As the term of Assemblywoman Janele Hyer-Spencer comes to an end, we would like to acknowledge two Community Liasons who were ever-present at our meetings for the past four years:

Ann M. Clinton

Stanley Mroz

We wish them well in their future endeavors, and are forever grateful for their help and service to our community!

Department Of Transportation (and Cooperation)

We were overwhelmingly pleased with the candor of our guest speaker at the December meeting - Department of Transportation's Staten Island Borough Commissioner Thomas Cocola.
His office has provided great assistance to us in the past and has overseen an abundance of improvement projects across SI.

We compiled an assortment of local issues and presented them to him in the form of photos. One of which was addressed the very next day.
The sidewalk cut at the S/E corner of South Railroad Avenue and Hamden Avenue was subject to a utility cut in early 2009, and has since remained with an uneven and unsightly patch.

We will provide updates as progress is made and will be requesting input from the community for future improvements.

November's Meeting

Veteran's Day poem read by Elena Brady:

They Did Their Share

On Veteran’s Day we honor
Soldiers who protect our nation.
For their service as our warriors,
They deserve our admiration.

Some of them were drafted;
Some were volunteers;
For some it was just yesterday;
For some it’s been many years;

In the jungle or the desert,
On land or on the sea,
They did whatever was assigned
To produce a victory.

Some came back; some didn’t.
They defended us everywhere.
Some saw combat; some rode a desk;
All of them did their share.

No matter what the duty,
For low pay and little glory,
These soldiers gave up normal lives,
For duties mundane and gory.

Let every veteran be honored;
Don’t let politics get in the way.
Without them, freedom would have died;
What they did, we can’t repay.

We owe so much to them,
Who kept us safe from terror,
So when we see a uniform,
Let’s say "thank you" to every wearer.

Happy Thanksgiving

We would like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to the members of our wonderful community!

Just in case you missed it, we celebrated the holiday, as a group, at the Corner House Restaurant two weeks ago. As always, the food was great.

November Meeting/Dinner Menu

As we have done in years past, our November meeting will also be our Thanksgiving Dinner celebration. We always have a wonderful time sharing a meal with the members of our community while returning the generosity of the Corner House Restaurant through patronization.
Also, we have an FDNY representative, from their Bureau of Training division, who will offer a short education on fire safety in our homes. And, provide everyone with free smoke detectors (just in time for the holidays).

Please RSVP to Elena at ebrady57@aol.com, or by phone at
(347) 850-0173.

SI Project Homefront

We were very grateful to have Debbie Parsons, of Staten Island Project Homefront, as our guest speaker at our October meeting. It's an understatement to say that the support they provide to U.S. military troops overseas is magnificent.

We will be collecting items for them at our November meeting.
